Loved this piece - have been reading the equivalent of YA since the 1970s (KM Peyton, Madeleine L'Engle, Katherine Paterson anyone?) and see no reason to stop
Ah, you may enjoy this fascinating old Guardian piece about KM Peyton in that case! Here's a quote: "So it's an irony that Peyton did not actually intend Flambards to be a children's book, but the first in a series of romantic novels. "The first one was definitely an adult book but it started with the girl at about 13, that was my mistake, and then carried on with her love life later on." She recalls a tussle with her publisher at the time over how it would be published. She didn't want it to go out under a children's imprint. Her editor offered to give it a more adult cover, but the disguise didn't work. "I got the most vitriolic letters from mothers saying they knew what my work was like, and they were shocked at this book," she says. "It was quite sexy actually." https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/feb/15/km-peyton-flambards-interview
I loved this so much, Emily. It always feels hard when physically you grow up but your love of reading (and the things you read, specifically), just doesn't.

How I LOVED this book! And when I met Biffy on my podcast she was everything and more. A gorgeous piece you’ve written here, Emily 😊
Thank you! Please feel free to link to that podcast episode here, Zanni, for those who read the comments!
Will do! It’s not out for a couple weeks yet though
