Loved reading this Emily! I knew you would have sensible things to say about Jamie Oliver. I did NOT know that we have such similar weird social media algorithm-enabled video viewing habits??! I know exactly the dinner prep videos you refer to. Currently cannot look away from "Getting my quintuplets ready for church" style videos...
Thank you for coming to my confessional! With these videos, I wonder if part of the fascination for the novelist is with those who are so freely "hi, this is my life, this is who I am", when we're more "hey so this is a story I made up which has nothing to do with me just read it okay".
Oliver's barely-covert racism is inexcusable, matched only by his (& his team's) appalling initial certainty that it'd be OK because we'll, come on, it's our mate Jamie, surely. . .
I thought it was so interesting how quickly Penguin fell on their sword because it's Jamie - had it been a lesser mortal I think they'd have done what many publishers do and just slink into the background, create distance, move on. As it is I think this book will be coming out in an edited form at some point.
