Such a great post. I am so glad I am not the only one who watched football for the first time (well, since being forced to watch my brother play as a kid). There are so many easy book characters to do as well with what you have and a copy of the book! A.L. Tait talks about it all the time.

True, and I hate the thought of Book Week being a trial for already overworked parents. But overall I feel strongly that we should let the kids direct their outfit, wear what they feel comfortable in. My son was so shy in early primary school and only wanted to wear a onesie on dress-up days, so we worked around that. By year 6 he was confident and wanted to be an enormous Grug. That took a lot of sewing but as it was his final year it seemed worth the bother.

Yes - I don't think we ever did Book Week costumes at school but it shouldn't be hard work for anyone to have to do. Make it easy.

Spider-Man is totally a proper book. Hundreds of them, in fact. And Frozen is the best adaptation of... well, okay, no one specific Brothers Grimm story, I admit, but nevertheless packed full of lovely Grimmness.

Exactly. And parents are tired and some kids find dressing up stressful and and and... Let Book Day be fun.

‘But no! My small children must be perfect replicas of Dorothea Brooke and Tertius Lydgate! And if you haven’t read Middlemarch you are a Philistine!’ [Mea culpa, I have not yet read Middlemarch. I’m saving it for retirement.]
